Firstly, happy holidays to everyone reading this, no matter what holiday you celebrate or religion you practice. Below are some adorable Christmas (and New Years) anime episodes that are both cute and heartfelt. Most of these can be streamed on Hidive or Crunchyroll. Please enjoy, and happy holidays!!
Author’s Note: This is an update of a post that was previously published two years ago.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Episode 10 – Troupe Dragon, On Stage! (They Had A Troupe Name, Huh)
The Christmas episode of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is some one of my holiday favorites. It has dragons, Toru, magical girls (and a magical boy), and yuri. In this episode, Toru is asked to put on a show for a local senior center to help celebrate Christmas. Kobayashi is too busy to help, so the dragons are on their own and their play ends up being… insanely awesome and hilarious. Throughout the episode, we also get to see Kanna getting ready for Santa. It’s the cutest thing ever.
Hinako Note Episode 11 – From One Year to the Next
Hinako Note is an adorable cute girls/slice of life anime that I personally love, but it wasn’t that well-received, so I am going to spread the love around~ In Episode 11, the girls decide to put on a Christmas play (yep, another play) at the residence hall/cafe where they dorm. The play ends up being a strange rendition of A Christmas Carol with a Chiaki dressed as a sexy fairy and… a live deer?
The second half of the episode is about New Year’s and Hinako, who is incredibly shy, reflects on how much she has grown over the past couples of months since joining the theatre troupe and meeting her friends. This episode is adorable and funny, just like the rest of Hinako Note.
Love, Chunnibyou, and Other Delusions – Season 1 OVA

THE QUEEN.
If you aren’t aware, Chuunibyou is my favorite anime ever, and it has its own Christmas episode – although it’s an OVA. At this point in the series, Rikka and Yuuta are dating, but their relationship hasn’t really gone anywhere. So, their friends decide to hold a Christmas party to get the couple in a romantic mood. The party is held at Dekomori’s mansion house, which is all done up for Christmas. We even get to see my girl (Dekomori) in a Christmas dress!
But because of Rikka’s and Dekomori’s chuunibyou tendencies and some unsuspecting alcohol-laced chocolate cake, insanity ensues instead of romance. I wasn’t too crazy about the alcohol part, but overall I enjoyed this episode. It’s very silly and cute. And we even get to see some yuri between Dekomori and Nibutani.
Gabriel Dropout Episode 9 – Christmas and New Year’s Eve Surprise
Gabriel Dropout is about two angel girls and two demon girls living in the human world. In Episode 9, Vigne (a demon) likes Christmas because of its merriness while Satania (also a demon) doesn’t like Christmas because of its importance in Christianity. Vigne, Gab, and Raphael manage to convince – brainwash? – Satania to celebrate Christmas with them… at least for a little bit. At one point, they tie her up because she isn’t feeling the holiday spirit. It’s a very bizarre but funny sequence.
The second half of the episode focuses on the girls’ trip to a local shrine on New Year’s Eve, but just like Christmas, it doesn’t go exactly as planned. But that’s okay because Vigne is golden in this episode.
K-On Season 1, Episode 7 – Christmas!
Someone mentioned the K-On Christmas episode to me in the comments a while back, so here it is! In this episode, the members of the Light Music Club decide to have a Christmas Party at Yui’s house. We get to see the girls exchange gifts (which of course has some ironic twists) and Sawano-sensei go a little crazy, which was both funny and slightly terrifying. We also see the girls perform party tricks and even Mio in a traditional kimono (the best part). Actually, my favorite part is probably the very beginning, where we get to see little Yui and Ui celebrate Christmas as children. It’s beyond adorable.
This episode – and the series as a whole – is perfect for fans of music, slice of life, and cute girls doing cute things (with extra cuteness added on top).
Is The Order A Rabbit? Episode 11- The Girl Dons a Red Coat and Drives a Team of Rabbits Across the Christmas Eve Night Sky
The title of this episode is pretty misleading… We don’t get to see any rabbits flying across the night sky. But we do get to see the adorable Christmas adventures of Chino, Cocoa, and the other girls in this kawaii slice of life anime. Throughout the episode, the girls visit the local Christmas market, the entire cast has their own Christmas celebration, and Chino gets a visit from a very scatterbrained Santa.
This episode will make you smile, laugh, and get into the holiday spirit. Not to mention, GochiUsa has such a relaxing and nice ambiance.
Yuru Yuri Episode 7- Christmas
YuruYuri is a very silly slice of life anime about girls with high yuri tendencies. It’s one of my favorite shows ever. In one of its Christmas episodes, Kyoko, the ringleader of the girls, decides that everyone is going to go on “dates” for Christmas, since the holiday is very popular for couples in Japan.
This episode is funny and random (as are all YuruYuri episodes) and portrays something many people are familiar with: the awkwardness of going to a holiday gathering with people you don’t know very well.
Soni-Ani: The Super Sonico The Animation Episode 11- A Saint Is Coming To Town
Super Sonico is a mascot and idol, known for her voluptuous figure and extremely revealing merchandise. However, the anime that Super Sonico stars in is actually very sweet and cute, though not without its fanservice. In Episode 11, Super Sonico’s town is celebrating Christmas, but the local shopping district is struggling to keep customers because of a new mall. So how does the shopping district fight back? With fanservice! Sonico and her friends dress up in sexy Santa Claus outfits.
Despite this, this episode is actually cute, funny, and has heartfelt ending.
Himouto! Umaru-chan Episode 8- Umaru and Christmas and New Year’s
Umaru-chan is an infamous, lazy, otaku girl. In this episode, she is excited to celebrate Christmas with her onii-chan. However, he needs to stay late at work that night, and Umaru is afraid her Christmas is going to be spoiled. In the second half of the episode, Umaru and her brother celebrate the New Year. She promises her brother that she’ll start to take things seriously this year, but we all know that isn’t going to happen.
Tokyo Mew Mew Episode 36 & 37- The Shining Tear: Celebrating Christmas With Just The Two of Us & Miracle of the Holy Night – No Secrets Anymore

Official art from the Tokyo Mew Mew manga.
Tokyo Mew Mew is an old magical girl series (my favorite of all time). Its Christmas special starts out cheery and cute; Ichigo, the main character, is excited to go on date with her boyfriend Masaya. However, Ichigo starts questioning her relationship with him because she is self-conscious. When she sees her friend depressed, Zakuro helps Ichigo pick out a Christmas present for Masaya.
But as in most anime, the Christmas celebration doesn’t go as planned. A bunch of aliens attack Ichigo and her team, ruining the Christmas date. The fight with the aliens continues into the next episodes. Part 2 still takes place on Christmas but it’s honestly less focused on Christmas and more on other plot elements. While Tokyo Mew Mew is an adorable anime, these Christmas episodes are not as lighthearted and cute as the other ones mentioned on this list.
Happy holidays, everyone! :3
how do you not have the K-on christmas episode on here… its a classic

Great picks! I’ve only seen GochiUsa’s and YY’s myself, unfortunately.
I remember kind of being into Tokyo Mew Mew as a kid in middle school, but I never watched a single episode. That’s a bit strange. I’m going to have to change that one day.
Happy holidays!

I would definitely check out the manga for Tokyo Mew Mew. It is much better. I enjoyed the anime, but they catered it more towards little kids. Thanks for reading and happy holidays to you too!

Excellent choice of Christmas episodes. In particular, there’s a certain about the Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu Ka? episode that makes it one of the best Christmas-themed anime episodes around 🙂

The K-On Christmas episode is enough for me. Heck watching K-On itself puts me in a festive mood. Good thing you added that one.
